The purpose of this site is to use the genius' wisdom to help players gain a better understanding of casino craps rules. For you fellow intellectually gifted individuals, here is a bit of casino craps history.
If you believe Richard Epstein, craps is a descendant of an earlier game that was known as Hazard. Hazard dates back to the Middle Ages. Formal rules for Hazard were first established in the early 1700s by Montmort. No one knows for sure where the name “craps” came from, but it may have come from the English word for crabs, or maybe from the French Crapaud, (meaning toad).
There are some who say that a form of craps was developed in the time of the Holy Roman Empire. Roman Legionnaires used to shave pig knuckles into cubes and toss them onto their shields as entertainment while in camp. This is when the term "to roll the bones" originated from.
On thing we do know is that the craps game as we know it today as casino craps came to the United States from Europe. |
